Our initial rising damp surveys are normally non-destructive that is they are undertaken with an electrical moisture meter as opposed to taking drilled samples for laboratory analysis or testing with a calcium carbide meter. Although electrical moisture meters cannot prove rising damp they are an invaluable tool for an initial investigation by an experienced surveyor and give an indication as to the likely source of moisture. As we have no desire to 'sell' a chemical damp proof course we will endeavour to rule out all other sources of moisture, which is in fact the recommendation of BS 6576 (code of practice of diagnosis of rising damp in walls and buildings and installation of chemical damp-proof courses). On average, 6 out of 10 of our surveys where the breakdown of a damp proof course has been suspected have been found to be attributable to other defects, with 2 out of the remaining 4 found to have air dry readings only requiring no remedial works whatsoever.
